The Beauty of Beads

Thursday, September 8th, 2011

We have had some really amazing artists teach in our studio here at Wired Up Beads. One of these artists is Sam Hibler, and we are so excited to have her back in our studio again this year! Her classes have become a favorite among our students. She is an amazing artist and she does a great job at helping others develop their craft.

Recently Sam was featured in The Crafts Report, a monthly business magazine for the crafts professional. It is an honor as an artist to be featured in such a magazine, and we are so excited to be able to host an instructor who has achieved such high praise! If you haven’t checked out the class line up she is offering in our studio later this month, be sure to take a look.

Have you ever had a class with Sam or seen her work? Tell us about it!

An Affordable Alternative…

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

Sometimes making jewelry gets expensive. Good tools, fluctuating silver prices, and the cost of classes can really add up. That’s why when we come across quality products that are more affordable we make sure and spread the word about them!

With the launch of our new website we have also added products from the new line of Tierra Cast. Tierra Cast focuses on manufacturing quality plated findings, and recently they released new designs and a new finish that we are excited about! They have added new charms and components to their silver, gold, and copper lines and they have introduced the black line, which opens up a lot of new design possibilities! Since all of Tierra Cast’s findings are plated they are much more wallet-friendly than standard sterling silver or gold products. Below you can see some of the new charms:

Here are some of the designs we created in our Tierra Cast Staff Development:

So pick up some Tierra Cast for your next weekend project, we can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

Whimsical. Inspirational. Fun.

I am not a teacher, but an awakener.
Robert Frost

We talk about inspiration so much around this office that the word has almost lost all meaning, which is sad because the concept of inspiration is such a beautiful one! Inspiring people and experiences have the power to move, motivate, and challenge us, and that is something that there is not enough of in day-to-day life.

Each of us has had our quintessential inspirational experiences–the kind that make you believe in yourself and your ability to create and contribute to the world around you. We have a teacher coming to our studio soon who has a reputation for imparting just that kind of inspiration.

Christi Friesen will be visiting our studio on August 27th and August 28th, bringing with her her signature humor, whimsical style, and encouraging demeanor. Everyone we’ve spoken to who has taken a class from her has left feeling happy, accomplished, and motivated for their next project. Christi knows that taking life too seriously can sap all of your creative energy, so she greets the world with a smile and a good attitude.

Don’t be intimidated by the detail in the projects presented here! Christi’s classes are a great introduction to the world of Polymer Clay, and are a lot of fun! Check out our website for the full details.

“The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources”

-Albert Einstein-

Let’s be honest: sometimes as an artist, original ideas are hard to come by. Everyone encounters that sense of burnout, a time when  you want to create but you can’t seem to find a vision for what that would look like. We’ve found that during these times the best thing to do is start with a basic shape, a simple concept, and then make it your own. Take the projects below for example. Each project featured in our blog today was created from pre-cut copper and bronze shapes. You can’t get more simple than that! What makes them into works of art is how each designer left their mark–by adding texture, dimension, and personality to each piece.

The simple touches, like stamping and patinas, can really make a piece stand out from the crowd.

The design possibilities are limited only by your imagination! Don’t let your fears of attempting something different hold you back. When you are working with economical mediums like copper, you don’t need to worry about the cost, experiment to your hearts content!

Check out all these new metal cutouts and let us in on your creative works. We know y’all will come up with some amazing pieces!

Taking Control of the Mess

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

“Creating art can sometimes be a messy job.”

-Eric Carl-

If you are a Type A sort of person, when you start a project you probably make a minimal mess and then compulsively clean it up as soon as you are done. For the rest of us, keeping a sense of order takes a more conscious effort (we are easily distracted). Often this means the “craft room” takes a hit–and ends up looking like the victim of a natural disaster. Take this photo we found online for example:

It definitely evokes that same overwhelmed feeling that takes over at the end of a project doesn’t it? That moment when you’re suddenly aware of the chaos you’ve created. But fear not! There are a lot of ways to wrangle in the mess and make your creative space a more inspiring environment. Here are a couple of articles that can help you get started:

TLC: How to Organize a Craft Room

DIY DISH: “Green” Craft Room Organization

Here at Wired Up Beads, we are familiar with the concept of “wrangling the mess”. With classes, new products, and staff projects in the works there is always something new going on and that means there is always something to organize! With the launch of our new website these organization tasks have become even more important, and we’ve gotten a whole new system going. Our most recent additions to the website and to our own organization routine are the Best Craft Organizer storage solutions. They are helping us manage our mess, and we are so excited about them that we decided to offer them to our customers as well.

(WUB Tip: Right now all our Storage products are 25% off!)

What do you think readers? Are you ready to get your creative space under control?
